Story Behind Ram Being Called As ” Maryada Purushottam “
As We, all know Lord Ram is Known as Maryada Purushottam Ram, but many of us might don’t know the actual meaning of the phrase “Maryada Purushottam.” Where it is a Sanskrit phrase. Maryada translates to “honor and righteousness” and “Purshottam” translates to the supreme man. Which means “the man who is supreme in honor.”
The lord ram is the son of King Dasharatha. Lord ram had three brothers, Bharatha, Shatrughan, and Lakshmana. for them Ram was an idol. Ram was the seventh avatar of the Hindu god Vishnu. There are a lot of reasons behind why lord ram is called Maryada Purushottam ram.
How The Beautiful Story Started Of ” Maryada Purushottam “
The second wife of Dasaratha, Kaikeyi wanted Dasaratha to send Rama into exile. And her son Bharat to be crowned as king. and he followed the orders of his father and went to exile for 14 years with Sita and brother Lakshmana. Because he believed and respected his father’s word. As he didn’t break the promise given to his father even after his father’s death. He was a perfect son.
Though Bharatha was declared as a king. At times, Bharatha would come to see him in the ashrams, where Lord Rama used to guide him as an elder brother. He was an example of a perfect brother.
And here’s another incident with Shurpanaka and related to Sita Haran. Surpanakha was Ravana’s sister. Who fell in love with the Ram. And forced him to marry her. Where Lakshmana cut off her nose and Surpanakha went to Ravana to seek help. And then Ravana decided to take revenge and he asked an evil named Maricha to take the form of a golden deer just to attract Sita. As Sita requested ram to catch the deer.
Ram went hunting the deer and Ravana in the form of a brahman went to the site’s hut. And kidnapped Sita. while went in search they both (Rama and Lakshmana) met Jatayu who informed them about the Sita’s abduction.
When he returned to Ayodhya after the war with Ravana. And at that time he used to take the feedback about his rule from the people i,e what’s going right or wrong. Where most of the negative feedback was related to Sita.
According to the people, Sita should not be accepted as a queen after staying with Ravana. So, he declared that Sita needed to pass the “Agni Pariksha” to be accepted back as the queen and wife of ram.
It was not like Ram didn’t trust Sita but he wanted to prove that he followed dharma. and won the hearts of all.
When Ram was sent to exile for 14 years at that time the gods wanted Ravana to be killed by Ram. and Ram refused and decided to stay with Sita and Lakshman.
Then Indra sent his son Kakasura with his crow just to tease Ram. But, that did not work because of the calmness of the ram. and then crow attacked Sita and Ram shot that crow using Brahmastra at the end the crow begged Maryada Purushottam Ram and Sita to his life.

Apart from this, he was an ideal son, ideal husband, the ideal king who cared for his kingdom as a father who cares for his child. He was not only kind and affectionate but generous and considerate of feelings for all around him. He had a marvelous physique and attractive manners. He was very simple and free from ostentation. He was blessed with supernatural qualities.
He was strong, attractive, and adaptable to every situation. He had all the believable qualities of a king’s son and the king of the kingdom. He was unbeatable, brave and his life was full of sacrifice. The lord ram has been labeled as noble, generous, fearless, and simple. He was a perfectionist, He never lied and he was always respectful to everyone.
And this is how he has been known as Maryada Purshottam Ram.
